Big South winds are a signature of a looming frontal system from the North and it’s just banging down here with swelling tides as water courses in from the Gulf. That’s pushing flats species to the far reaches but the big Northerly winds are very welcome. Strong wind shifts from the North send Redfish and Black Drum on an absolute feeding frenzy and that’s where we’ll intercept them and go deep into the numbers. Windward shorelines are a go to many times but in winds pushing over 20 knots, not so much. Water color changes become the target and sometimes finding them can be a challenge if everything is shredded.
Big tide swings, cold fronts, rain, and fog have all been a hallmark of mid-March and that made for some huge boxes for our guests and Spring Breakers from all over the State. Gosh, it was good seeing lots of these youngsters again; a year older and eager to wet a line. It’s been said around here many times that “if your child is into hunting and fishing, there’s not much to worry about with regards to their development”. With the big winds and weather, Trout took a backseat as the big pull and lure of mixing schools of Black Drum and Redfish had everyone’s attention.
Undisputed Airboat Fishing Excellence
It’s that time of year when huge schools of Black Drum filter into the back reaches to spawn and gorge on sand worms. By airboat and by bayboat, the Capt’s of Castaway Lodge have been lighting them up. We’ve had drive-in guests from all over South Texas down toward the coast on Spring Break and that’s even seen folks driving in to experience our specialty airboat trips. With construction here at the lodge through Spring, I’ve handed the coveted Spring Run to Capt. Chris Cady aka “Bubba” and he was born to take my place and he’s been on a smash and grab with handle breakers on the ice chest. Capt. James Cunningham, Capt. James Eastep, and Capt. Donnie Heath have been on boat fishing duties and knocking it out of the park as well.
Lodge News
Spring has definately “sprung” with plantings greening up as if to usher in St. Patrick’s Day with a vengeance. The Bayou property is just exploding with the deepest green and it’s wonderful to see our effortsbringing fruit. It looks like all of our trees came through the heavy barrage of bulldozer and excavation work just fine, we even managed to save a Cypress Tree. We’ll be finishing up drywall work on the Conference/Dining Building this week and starting drywall on the Bayou Quarters Building with Stone re-starting there as well. Some events during construction will give you headaches, some others will give you nightmares…LOL but all in all it’s been pretty seamless and Capt. Donnie Heath’s Supervision has been key with a marvelous scheduling crescendo last week that came off beautifully.
