Redfish Rampage, Drag Strip-Teaser
Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley
We navigated our way through a lot of big weather lately to bring the 2012 Alligator Season & 2012 Early Teal Season to a successful close. We also managed to weave our way through the radar to takedown heavy limits of Redfish. Saturday’s pre-dawn radar imagery was just about as bad as it could get. We were fortunate to get a break mid-morning and we put off to a some really nice action over mud/grass. Capt. James was struggling as the rest of us were climbing up on limits. He called me and said “We’ve got one fish and one break-off all morning”. He made another move and just laid into the fish taking full slot limits along with all their oversized fish. What a comeback!
I got a little taste of that Sunday morning as Capt. Doug dialed in and was working on limits on a slow bite but I couldn’t seem to do much of anything that yielded positive results. I made a little real estate shift and burned some fish “ultra” shallow. While I hadn’t fished the area in over a year, first test was to see if they were there, and that test came back positive. The second test was to see if they would feed and they did….to 28.5″.
Filming On Location
Early week we were happy to welcome actor, friend, and founder of Killin N Grillin now KNG Chronicles to the lodge for a re-visit. No big filming agenda for this visit, just a melt down with some old friends and catching up on old times. Mid week we welcomed in a crew with 1080 Productions for some on the water film work for a documentary on preventing polution in our rivers “up stream”.

Cool snaps and cold fronts are bad news for Alligator hunters. I think our luck on the weather just couldn’t have been any better and we managed to finish as strong as we started with Brad C. and guests taking a 6′, 8′, and a 9′ to round out a great year.
Teal & Migrations
The Blue Winged bullets set the stage for a great season upcoming and the weather is certainly a reminder that is right around the corner. I watched yesterday, as I have many years on the bay, as a big migration of White Pelicans began their vortex descending to rest here where they will spend the Winter. As migrations go, we picked up a secondary push of Humming Birds here at the lodge which is unusual. About a week and a half ago they had all but disappeared. The early last week they began swarming the feeders again staging up for the run to Mexico and beyond.
We hope the dawn of a new week is a good one for everyone, come see us when you get a chance! Be sure to “Like” us on Facebook and we promise to “love you back”!
