Did I say something about “big catalysts” on the last fishing report, oh yea, and sure enough the last cool snap brought it home.  Put a 180 wind shift with velocity on our real estate and I’ll show you some fish boxes that will strain the handles and bend the boards.  That coined the term “Smash and Grab” here years ago as we’d slip into the big wind shifts and load the boat.  Solid Redfish from mid-slot on up and an emerging presence of mixing schools of Black Drum have made for lots of smiles and memories of a lifetime.

Sure enough, post front, the Redfish got a little lethargic and that’s when we saw an explosion in the Black Drum activity.  It’s noticeable, with Redfish coming in short of limits and Black Drum tipping the scales to limits with lots of CPR.  These fish we call “Ponies”, solid mid-slot bruisers and great eating on the dining table.  We rode the tide on the cold front to the barrier island with big winds flooding the back marsh and igniting the frenzy of feeding activity.  As the winds back down, you just know to be looking for a falling tide and things to get “skinny” as the water drains out.  This will send countless fish toward the deeper environs of the back lakes pulling fish off the extreme shallows.  Redfish will tend to be more stationary with Black Drum being fast movers and very sensitive to tide shifts.

Trout Horizons

We’re starting to see live bait showing at area bait camps and that will find us starting to ease into targeting Trout on boat fishing trips among milder weather heading into April.  We’ll be targeting oyster reefs and mid-bay structure as things open up.  For the wade fisherman, anytime is the right time to dig in with soft plastics and sure enough, we’ve got reports of “Early Croaker” showing up at bait camps nearly 2 months ahead of typical “seasonality”.
