The Bite Is On In The Skinny Water!

Spring Break wrapped up last week, and this week brought some familiar faces and longtime guests back for more action. That’s the way we like it down here in Seadrift—good people, steady action, and a few stories that’ll be retold around the fire pit for a long time.
We were glad to welcome back John Robinson with SDR Construction out of Austin and his crew, rolling in mid-morning for a two-day run
with us. Captain Devin Spencer had them lined out chasing redfish and black drum. Day one made them work for it—a little grind, a little patience—but that’s fishing this time of year. No complaints, just a warm-up. Saturday flipped the switch. The bite turned on, and they got into them right—stacking up solid redfish and drum limits and putting a proper exclamation point on the trip.
Meanwhile, Captains James Cunningham and Chris Cady were doing what they do best—loading up the airboats and putting Rocky Pack’s group right where they needed to be. Seven longtime guests, two days on the water, and those boys didn’t waste any time. The shallow water bite is heating up, and when it’s on, it’s on in a hurry. No doubt about it, it’s airboat fishing prime time.
As Captain James Cunningham put it, “This time of year you’ve just got to stay on ’em. One day you grind it out, the next day they’re piled up where they ought to be—and when it happens, you better be ready, because it gets right in a hurry.”
Back at the lodge, the Castaway crew has been hard at it—sprucing things up, dialing in the grounds, and carving out some new gathering spots down along the bayou. Just in time for spring evenings filled with cold drinks, tall tales, and a little friendly debate about “the one that got away”—even though we all know most of them made it in the box this week.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a strong start to the spring run. Water temps are creeping up, fish are getting more predictable, and if this past weekend is any indication, we’re just getting warmed up.
If you’ve been thinking about getting down here, now’s the time. The fish are moving, and we’re ready for you.
