Tightening Down The Drag & Switching To Improved Cylinder
Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley
We managed to mesh a full push from our Georgia/Carolina/Arkansas contingent with the top of the Bell Curve on the wingshooting of late. We hit a lull early week that swung hard in our favor as weather and wind undulated with passing weak fronts. Our head was on a swivel with the flip flops in wind projections. Complicating complete success was extreme low water early week which crippled a few ares. As things turned our way, water levels rose slightly putting us hard on the guns with heavy straps.
In true Wisconsin fashion (Texas Style), our “Can Killer”, Capt. Matt Raley found the “Red Velvet long bills” working the edge of Oyster boat activity and went to working on them. Being a fresh water duck, we typically only harvest a half dozen a year or so. Capt. Matt thumped that entire season total on one morning hunt Friday and then followed that up again! Evidently the birds had gotten displaced from their fresh water haunts and came for a visit.
Calling An Audible
Capt. James Cunnigham really came through the other morning as an electrical issue on the airboat left us one group short of a full tender. James managed to fly in close to the blind with his bayboat and then led our guests from Georgia to the blind on foot. This was no easy feat but they pulled it off under his leadership and managed to thump the birds pretty well. Special thanks to Capt. Avery Wallace also for his hard work getting us out of a bind.
Fishing Report
Capt. Chris Cady managed to catch up with the Redfish and put a whooping on them hard using bait over area potholes. Guests of Ken S. managed to go deep in the numbers Sunday morning after shooting near limits on ducks with Capt. James.
We are going to finish up the season strong with guests from Austin and Nacogdoches later this week. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable end of the season as well. Come see us when you get a chance!
