Wings & Water

Water levels rose to uncomfortable levels after the last cool front eased up on Saturday. Water is like a rubber band, wind can push it and stretch it but once the wind lays down it comes bouncing back. That is, until enough of it gets pushed out of the bay system on prevailing Northerly winds. That said, the higher water had us concerned for no reason heading into duck hunts over the weekend. Solid straps of Gadwall, Redheads, Teal, Widgeon, and Pintail stacked up on mild winds but lots of air traffic.

Our first Buck & Duck combination came off without a hitch as Terry M. and his grandson Blaine took an older 8pt cull buck and a doe. Blaine was a little gun shy after having a bad experience with a .300 Win Mag so we took a morning off to do some shooting with his grandpa’s .243. We got him pulling the trigger and that led to a nice heart shot on his doe on the third day. Hats off to Capt. Cody Adams for working with the youngster and etching memories of a lifetime for our guests. Afternoon duck action left a little to be desired but Capt. James managed some shooting on Redheads. Afternoons will get better as we move into the season.

On the hog front, they are definately on the move with guests from Houston loading the wagon on a recent evening hunt. We are hunting over feeders from stationary ground blinds this time of year shooting latest GEN Night Vision which is a blast.

Fishing

Schooling redfish were noted over mud/grass, some of which were sitting in real clear water that made them hard to get on a hook. Capt. Chris scouted early ahead of an afternoon cast portion of a cast and blast trip to find fish working shorelines over mud/grass. By the time he got back to them they had moved forcing a retreat to action on Black Drum over nearby sand and scattered shell.

Lodge News

Mid-week we’ve got a big blast of arctic air that’s been making the headlines lately. This will set the tone for the waterfowl season and definately push some water out of the bays. These are all pluses in our opinion and we’re looking for building concentrations of birds moving forward. Come see us when you get a chance!
