August 3–10, 2026

What a beautiful week we’ve had here on San Antonio Bay! This past week was a little bit of everything around Castaway Lodge. We spent the first part of the week getting things squared away around the lodge and taking advantage of a little breathing room to get ready for what’s shaping up to be a busy September.

By Friday, though, it was time to quit working around the lodge and get back to what we’re here for. The trips started rolling out for one more big weekend on the Texas coast before the kids head back to school.

Cory Hickey got things started with a drive-in flounder trip with Capt. Chris Cady. It’s always fun when somebody comes down with one thing in mind, and this time it was getting after those flounder.

Paul Brown and his three boys also made it back down to stay with us, and they enjoyed another great day on the water with Capt. James Cunningham. We always enjoy seeing familiar faces come back through the doors at Castaway, and there’s not much better than watching a dad get his boys out on the bay making a few more memories before another school year gets underway.

Following right behind Capt. James were Capt. Chris and Capt. Braden with a group of college boys ready for a day on the water, while Capt. Doug Russell headed out with Pam Peterson. All in all, it made for a great weekend around the lodge and a nice reminder of what summertime at Castaway is all about—good people, good fishing, and families and friends getting together on the Texas coast.

Summer Heat Is Here

There’s no getting around it: August in South Texas is hot.

This is the time of year when getting an early start can make all the difference. Those first few hours of daylight are worth taking advantage of, both from a fishing standpoint and from a comfort standpoint. As that sun climbs higher, staying hydrated and being prepared for the heat becomes just as important as what tackle you brought along.

But hot weather certainly doesn’t mean fishing season is over.

Far from it…

August is simply a month when you adjust your approach, make the most of the cooler morning hours, pay attention to conditions, and let the fish tell you what they want. There are still plenty of opportunities across San Antonio Bay and the surrounding waters for folks willing to get out there and put in the time.

Back to School & Looking Toward September

This weekend also marks that familiar change we see every August. Summer vacations start winding down. The kids head back to school. Football practices and school schedules take over, and things around the coast settle into a slightly different rhythm. We hate to see summer vacation come to an end, but around Castaway Lodge it also means we start turning our attention toward September. September has always been one of those months we look forward to around here. The summer crowds begin thinning out, we start getting a little closer to a break from the hottesttemperatures, and our calendar begins filling back up with groups coming down to fish San Antonio Bay. That’s why we’ve been using every available day to get things around the lodge ready. We’ve got a busy September ahead of us, and we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces along with some new ones. For everybody heading back to school this week, we hope you had a great summer and managed to squeeze in a little time on the water along the way.
