Fall Fishing Frenzy & Waterfowl on the Horizon | Castaway Lodge – Seadrift, TX
Fishing & Hunting Report | October 12–18, 2026
October continues to roll right along here at Castaway Lodge, and there’s certainly no shortage of action around this place!
Between boats heading out every morning, groups coming and going, and preparations underway for the upcoming waterfowl season, our crew has had plenty on their plates. That’s just the way we like it, and there’s still plenty more to come
before we wrap up this month!
We welcomed back a familiar face this week with Jesse Schuurman returning for another round
of fishing action. Jesse headed out with Capt. Braden Proctor, enjoying another day on the water. It’s always a pleasure having our returning customers back at the lodge. After all, these are the folks who have become more like family over the years, and we never take that loyalty for granted.
Josh Wollard continued his two-week run here at Castaway Lodge, bringing in a steady rotation of different groups.
Wednesday had his crew hitting the water with Capt. Devin Spencer, followed by another trip with Capt. James Cunningham to finish out his stretch. Over the past couple of weeks, Josh has brought in quite a few different faces, giving them the opportunity to experience what our guides and the Texas Coast have
to offer. It’s been one group after another, and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it!
“Josh has brought a bunch of good people down here these past couple of weeks. We’ve had a lot of different faces in the boat, plenty of laughs, and some good times on the water. That’s what makes this job hard to beat!”
— Capt. James Cunningham
Another big part of our week was welcoming David Collins and his Service Wizard crew, who rolled into Castaway Lodge with 28 people
ready for two days of fishing. Getting a group that size organized, out on the water, and back to the lodge takes a coordinated effort from everyone involved. Our guides were out doing what they do best while the girls back at the lodge made sure everything was ready for the crew’s return. We always enjoy seeing these larger groups come together, sharing stories, swapping a little friendly competition, and making memories that go well beyond the fish they catch.
“When you’ve got a group that size, everybody has to work together. The best part is watching those guys come back to the
dock laughing, cutting up, and already talking about the next trip.”
And just when you think we’ve covered everyone, the weekend rolls around with seven more groups making their way to Castaway Lodge! Our guides continued running trips, the girls kept everything moving back at the lodge,
and the entire crew worked together to make sure every group received the same Castaway experience we’ve built our reputation on. That’s one thing about October around here. There’s always another boat to get ready, another group arriving, and another fishing story waiting to be told!
While the fishing side of things has been rolling along, there’s another big project getting underway as we prepare for duck
season. Capt. Doug Russell has taken the lead on getting our duck blind building work started out on the water. Getting those blinds ready is a big part of what goes into preparing for another waterfowl season, and there’s a lot
more involved than most folks ever get to see. From getting materials together to working out on the water, it’s a job that takes time, effort, and plenty of teamwork.
“Duck season doesn’t start on opening morning. It starts weeks before that with all the work nobody sees. Getting these blinds built and ready out on the water is what sets us up for a good season.”
— Capt. Doug Russell
With the cooler weather making its way toward the Texas Coast, the excitement for waterfowl season continues to build. The phones have
been ringing with hunters making plans, and we’re looking forward to getting our crews back into the blinds for another season of early mornings, good hunts, and great memories.
As we keep pushing through October, I can’t say enough about the crew we’ve got here at Castaway Lodge. From the guides spending their days on the water to the girls handling everything back at the lodge, and now the work getting underway for duck season, everybody has a hand in making this place what it is. We’re fortunate to have so many great customers who continue to put their trust in us year after year. Whether you’re bringing down a corporate group, getting a few
buddies together, or planning your next hunting trip, we appreciate every one of you. We’ve still got plenty of fishing ahead of us, duck season is knocking on the door, and there’s no telling what the next few weeks will bring!
