Summer Trout Bite Continues as Castaway Lodge Gears Up for Fall Hunting Season
Castaway Lodge Fishing Report
July 5, 2026
After several weeks of running at full speed, this week gave our guides the opportunity to spend some quality time on the water while staying dialed in on the summer bite. We also welcomed a couple of drive-in trips that kept rods bent and smiles on faces.
Captain Chris Cady kicked things off aboard the airboat with Wayne Levy and his group of four. The crew covered plenty of water and stayed on a steady trout bite, putting together a fun day on San Antonio Bay. Captain James Cunningham also welcomed back Brandon Leal and his family for another drive-in trip. Familiar faces are always a pleasure to have around the lodge, and it didn’t take long before they were enjoying a productive morning catching quality trout.
Between trips, our guides made the most of the week by scouting new areas and keeping tabs on changing conditions across the bay system. The trout bite continues to be the headline, especially during the early morning hours over shell and grass. Redfish remain scattered along protected shorelines and back lakes, and with healthy bait throughout the system, we’re excited about what the rest of the summer has to offer.
Captain James Cunningham summed it up best:
“Any time we get a chance to cover a little extra water, we learn something that helps the next trip. That’s what keeps us one step ahead.”
The week also gave our team the opportunity to tackle the work that keeps our operation running smoothly. Every boat received routine maintenance, trailers were serviced, equipment was inspected, and tackle was reorganized to ensure everything is in top shape before another busy run of anglers. It’s the behind-the-scenes work that helps every guest leave the dock with confidence, knowing their guide and equipment are ready for a great day on the water.
As we celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, everyone here at Castaway Lodge wishes you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable Independence Day. We hope your holiday was filled with time on the water, around the grill, and making memories with the people who matter most. Most importantly, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Your sacrifice and dedication make the freedoms we celebrate possible.
We’d also like to give a special shout-out to Bubba’s for once again putting on what we believe is the best Fourth of July fireworks
show in Texas. Thank you for bringing our community together each year and giving both locals and visitors an incredible way to celebrate America’s birthday. It’s a tradition we’re proud to be a part of, and we appreciate everything you do for Seadrift.
As we turn the page toward September, the excitement around the lodge is already beginning to build. Early Teal Season, Alligator Season, and Dove Season will be here before we know it, and dates are already beginning to fill. From watching the sunrise in the marsh to chasing trophy alligators and spending afternoons in the dove fields, there’s no better place to experience the start of hunting season than the Texas Coast. If you’ve been thinking about a fall getaway, now is the time to reserve your spot before the calendar fills up.
Whether you’re joining us for a day chasing trout on San Antonio Bay or making plans for a September hunting adventure, our entire team looks forward to welcoming you to Castaway Lodge.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Kris Kelley
